Michael Sulzner is a seasoned policy officer serving in the Directorate-General for Health and Food Safety (DG SANTE) of the European Commission, located in Luxembourg. Michael’s academic credentials include a Master’s and PhD in Microbiology from the University of Vienna, along with a Postgraduate Diploma in European Law and an LLM in Public International Law from the University of London. Further, he holds certificates from the University of Surrey, Guildford, in Applied Toxicology.
Since 2013, Michael has been steering EU policy development in the field of vaccination within the Public Health Directorate of DG SANTE. Before that, he spent three years working as a Seconded National Expert with the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), focusing on international relations and stakeholder dialogue. In addition, he is a permanent official of the Austrian Ministry of Health, contributing over 15 years of service in various domains of food safety.
Professor Elisabeth Sanders. PhD.

Professor Elisabeth Sanders, a distinguished paediatrician and professor in Immunology and Infectious Diseases, has made a significant contribution to the field of infectious diseases and vaccinology. As a clinician-immunologist at the University Hospital for Children in Utrecht, she has vast experience treating patients with primary immunodeficiency disease and recurrent infections. From 2009-2014, she served as the Director of Research and Education at the same hospital. In 2015, she took up a position at Chief Science Officer at the National Institute for Public Health and The Environment, The Netherlands in addition to her position at the university hospital.
A prolific author, Prof. Sanders has written more than 300 peer-reviewed international publications and has been cited over 9,000 times. Her research interests include the immunology and epidemiology of vaccine-preventable diseases, particularly pneumococcal vaccinations, and the role of the respiratory microbiome in health and disease. She has mentored 39 PhD students and contributed to significant global health platforms, including the WHO SAGE working group on pneumococcal conjugate vaccinations.

Associate Fellow, Centre on Global Health and Security, Chatham House
Professor David Salisbury, an esteemed associate fellow at the Centre on Global Health Security and former Director of Immunisation at the Department of Health, is widely recognised for his influential role in the UK national immunisation programme. Serving until 2014, he introduced a plethora of new vaccines, tackled the MMR autism crisis, and offered guidance to various governments and international organisations. His remarkable services to immunisation were acknowledged when he was made a Companion of the Order of the Bath in the Queen’s Birthday Honours, 2001.
Trained as a paediatrician at Oxford and the prestigious Great Ormond Street Hospital, he is a Fellow of several esteemed institutions, including the Royal College of Physicians and the Academy of Medical Sciences. Currently, he serves as the Chair of the Jenner Vaccine Foundation. He continues to work extensively with the WHO on the Global Programme for Vaccines, including chairing the WHO Global Commission for Certification of Poliomyelitis Eradication. His research interests cover global health security, the impact of vaccines on antimicrobial resistance, and he has authored over 100 publications on immunisation and paediatric topics.
